Five One Labs is pleased to announce IGNITE, our very first entrepreneurship program focusing on achieving product market fit. This program will help you better understand the market you are competing in and how you can create the most value for your customers.

We are now recruiting tech-entrepreneurs from diverse communities all around Iraq to participate in this month-long program. If you are passionate about a tech-focused startup idea and want to learn the skills to turn it into a business, this program is right for you!

We will be running this program three times over the course of the coming months. Please see below for more information.

What do you get from joining Ignite?

Five One Labs entrepreneurs are provided with a variety of support. Our vision is to develop an inclusive network of innovators that have the support, skills, and connections to positively change their communities and countries.

We do our best to give you all the support and resources available to us. This includes:

  1. Hands on training to help you learn the fundamentals of starting a business. There will be three trainings per week focusing on hard business skills and design thinking,

  2. Connections to the business and tech community, investors, and mentors, along with access to marketing, design, and technical experts as you grow your business,

  3. The full support of a world-class team of trainers, advisors, and friends at Five One Labs who will push forward to succeed

  4. Join the growing Five One Labs community and get access to networking events and an entrepreneurial family to share the experience with!

Who is eligible to apply?

All applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the program:

  • Have the ability to read, write, and speak in English,

  • Have a tech-related business idea that they want to launch,

  • Are willing to work on their business full time (9:00am- 5:00pm from Sunday through Thursday every week) as if it were your job,

  • Are able to be in Sulaimani for the entirety of the program (Please note that if you live outside of Sulaimani, we have a small number of scholarships available to help cover costs of housing and transportation).

Program Dates

We will hold three separate Ignite programs before the launch of our full time incubator program running from September-November, 2019. Please note that although this is a standalone program, completing the Ignite program is a requirement for applying to the  the full time incubator program running in September 2019.

The dates are as follows:

  • April 1 - 30th (Full time weekdays, Sundays through Thursdays from 9am to 5pm)

  • June 2nd - 30th (Full time weekdays, Sundays through Thursdays from 9am to 5pm)

  • July 1st - 30th (Full time weekdays, Sundays through Thursdays from 9am to 5pm)

The Five One Labs Tech Incubator

Our three-month incubator takes you through the steps necessary to turn your idea into a reality. By the end of the incubator, you will have developed a solution that fits your customers’ needs, and you will have built a working version of it (a Minimum Viable Product). You will have developed a professional-looking pitch deck about your idea and will have the opportunity to present it to Five One Labs management, mentors, advisors, and potential investors. You will have defined your business model, built connections to an incredible network of mentors and advisors around the world, and will be significantly closer to launching your business.

Graduates from the Five One Labs Incubator program will have the opportunity to compete for seed funding of up to $15,000!

Join the Five One Labs Entrepreneur Academy

Five One Labs is pleased to announce that we are launching the applications for our second Entrepreneur Academy, starting on November 11th in our coworking space in Sulaimani, “The Lab:Suli.”. The Entrepreneur Academy is a two-month, evening training course that will teach you the fundamentals of how to start and lead an innovative business.

The Academy will run every Sunday and Tuesday evening (5:00-7:00pm) from November 11th - January 15th. The Academy is a highly selective, focused, and energetic program for people who are planning to launch their own businesses or who have launched their business within the past year.

All Five One Labs entrepreneurs must be committed to attending the full two months of training (from November 11 - January 15, 2018). The training will be held on Sunday and Tuesday evenings from 5:00-7:00pm.

The program will be held in English, so candidates must have good written and spoken English ability in order to apply. This means being able to converse easily and understand business terms.

You:

  • Are an aspiring entrepreneur with a creative idea for a new business

  • Have strong self-motivation and professionalism

  • Possess a good level of English speaking and writing skills

  • Are able to attend the Academy in-person at The Lab:Suli each Sunday and Tuesday from 5:00-7:00pm

Your business:

  • Is innovative and has a high chance for success

  • Has a scalable model for growth and income-generation

  • Is in the idea stage or later of business development (you already have a set plan and strategy, and just need to implement it)

Program Cost

The cost of the program is $250. The cost will include two trainings per week for eight weeks (for a total of 16 training sessions), access to advisors and potential additional support, and individual advice from the Five One Labs training team during “Office Hours” every week.

We welcome diversity in our program and encourage all individuals to apply. In order to ensure that those who are interested can participate, we have a limited number of scholarships available to cover some or all of the cost for entrepreneurs on a needs-based system, particularly for university students and displaced people. If you are not able to participate without financial support, you can apply for one of our scholarships using our Financial Aid Form.

The Program

Five One Labs is a startup incubator in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) that aims to empower entrepreneurs to build successful businesses. Our first summer program in Sulaimani, Iraq will be held from July 22nd August 12th.

Participants are required to attend the training on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays from 4pm to 6pm each day. The trainings are held in Five One Labs' brand new Innovation Hub in Sulaimani, opposite of Faruk Group on Salim Street.

The Five One Labs summer program is a free, three-week long program for university students and young innovators that takes your business from idea to a reality. Over three weeks, we will teach you the skills to develop an innovative business idea. it's an action-packed, creative program where people learn how to develop and test business ideas, pitch their business, lead organizations or projects, and more.

You will go through intensive entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership training, and will be connected to a mentor with whom you will speak each week to obtain extra guidance. Participants who attend 90% of the training sessions and complete all homework assignments will receive a certificate of participation.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

We are looking for incredible university students or young innovators from diverse backgrounds who have a business idea! All participants must be committed to focusing developing their business over the three weeks (from July 22 to August 12). The expectations are that the individual or the team will come to the co-working space three days a week (Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and treat this as their opportunity to understand the business aspect behind their idea with the help of our qualified trainers and mentors. The entrepreneurs will also have a weekly Skype call with a mentor who will guide them through the process of creating a pitch deck.

The program will be held in English, so candidates must have good written and spoken English ability in order to apply. This means being able to converse easily and understand business terms.

In addition, we strongly prefer teams over individuals, as we believe teams will be more successful in overcoming diverse challenges. Note: if you are applying as a team, each team member should submit a separate application. The information about the start up idea can be the same in the applications of team members.

ABOUT FIVE ONE LABS:

Five One Labs is a start-up incubator that helps talented entrepreneurs in conflict-affected areas launch and grow their businesses in the Middle East. ABOUT THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING AND COMMUNITY ASSOCIATE POSITION:

Five One Labs is a newly launched social venture. Our first full incubator cohort, based in Erbil, concluded in early February 2018 with the granting of $30,000 to 3 exciting new startup businesses at our Demo Day in early February. Recently, we secured a grant to create and develop an Innovation Hub in Sulaimani, in which we will have training space for Five One Labs and our partner organization, Re:Coded, as well as a co-working space for Sulaimani entrepreneurs and businesspeople. We are running a program called “Entrepreneurship for All” to translate core modules of our curriculum into Arabic and Kurdish and run exciting, short term programs for diverse young people in Erbil and Sulaimani Governorates.

We are a fun, hardworking, and fast-moving team looking for an innovative professional to join us in April to help translate our training curriculum from English into Kurdish and Arabic, develop and manage the Innovation Hub community, and deliver trainings as necessary in all three languages.

The Five One Labs team is looking for a confident, organized, self-motivated individual with experience in the private sector and/or entrepreneurship, experience with community outreach and marketing, fluency in both Kurdish and Arabic, and the ability to deliver trainings on business concepts. This individual should be able to work within a small team, and be professional in all business interactions. Although this is a short-term contract at first, we are searching for someone that is interested in learning, growing, and potentially becoming a valued long-term contributor to the organization.

This will be a great opportunity to see the inner workings of one of Iraq’s first startup incubators!

The successful candidate will support Five One Labs to:

  • Translate Five One Labs English training curriculum into Arabic and Kurdish
  • Lead trainings for non-English-speaking participants in Kurdish and Arabic and assist in English trainings
  • Develop and grow the Innovation Hub community, which includes working professionals and entrepreneurs, program participants, and outside groups. As necessary, the Associate should be prepared to aid in the procurement of materials and working with vendors.
  • Assist in the marketing outreach for the Innovation Hub, and Five One Labs training programs in Erbil and Sulaimani
  • Develop relevant marketing content, including blogs, one pagers, and email campaigns about the Innovation Hub and Five One Labs

The Entrepreneurship Training and Community Associate will work closely with Executive Director Alice Bosley and Director of Operations Patricia Letayf, and will report directly to Pat Cline, Director of Training and Business Advisory. The team will ensure that the selected candidate has access to all relevant materials and support to succeed in his or her role.

The Five One Labs team is seeking candidates with the following profile:

Skills and Knowledge

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field (Business, International Relations, Education, etc.).
  • Fluent in  English, Kurdish, and Arabic (highly developed written and oral communication skills)
  • 2+ years work experience in private sector and/or NGO roles, emphasis placed on previous experience in customer service and/or business development
  • Familiarity with business fundamentals, innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Solid computer skills: must be able to work effectively and accurately with Google products, Word, Excel, and email

Personal Characteristics

  • Outgoing, positive, and interested in developing a strong community
  • Team-oriented and enthusiastic about working with and supporting others
  • Attention to detail, conscientious about accuracy and professional presentation at all times

The Program
