The Summer Festival is Over… What Next?
Over the past three weeks, Five One Labs has been very busy in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq! As part of the Summer Startup Festival, we sponsored a Social Impact Hackathon (organized by Re:Coded and IOM), ran entrepreneurship workshops in two cities with over 100 participants in partnership with the Nishtiman Youth Network, launched our first Startup Bootcamp weekend, and held a panel discussion with over 100 attendees and six incredible panelists on fostering an entrepreneurial culture in Kurdistan.
At the panel discussion, a few attendees mentioned that organizations often come to hold short events and then leave again, or do not do proper follow up. We’re in Kurdistan for the long term, and we’re planning to continue building off the momentum we’ve created through the Summer Startup Festival. We’ve met incredible young entrepreneurs, built strong partnerships, and had great discussions about how to best support entrepreneurship in host and refugee communities in the KRI.
So… now what?
Five One Labs just registered as a nonprofit in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. In September, we will begin our full array of activities, including hosting more Startup Bootcamps, running focused trainings for women entrepreneurs and refugee entrepreneurs, and launching our first 3-month incubator program for full-time entrepreneurs who have what it takes to launch a scalable, innovative business. Here are a few dates for you to keep in mind:
Late August 2017: Applications open for our first 3-month incubator cohort. More information will be available about this program at that time.
Who is this program for? This program is only for people with scalable business ideas who are able to commit full-time to launching their startup. The application will have multiple rounds, including the written application, an interview, and a mandatory workshop.
Sunday, August 27: Applications open for our next Startup Bootcamp, which will be held on September 15th. More information about the Bootcamp will be released at that time.
Who is this program for? This training is for anyone with an entrepreneurial idea who wants to learn more about the skills and mindsets of launching a business.
In the US, we’ll be launching a crowdfunding campaign to raise enough money to run all of our programs this Fall. We are so excited about all of the amazing people and opportunities in Iraq and want to make sure we can properly support all of the work we want to do.
